What BIG LIFT Covers

The list of eligible improvements is practical and wide-ranging. Businesses can use the grant funds for facade renovations, signage, lighting, landscaping, parking lot resurfacing, murals, and other projects that improve the appearance and function of a commercial property. This is not a loan. It is a reimbursement, meaning you complete the work, submit receipts, and BCIC pays back the approved share.

To qualify, a business must be locally owned and operated, located within Brownsville city limits, have been running for at least two years, and employ fewer than 20 people. That covers a wide range of neighborhood shops, service businesses, and storefronts across the city.

How the District Schedule Works

BIG LIFT is rolling out district by district through spring 2027. District 1 applications closed July 10, 2026. District 2 opens September 1 and runs through October 9, 2026. District 3 follows December 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027, and District 4 runs March 1 through April 19, 2027. If your business is in District 1 and you missed the first window, the city has not yet announced whether there will be a second round, so it is worth reaching out directly to BCIC to ask.
